History on wheels
The Historic Vehicle Collection at the National Emergency Services Museum brings together some of the most iconic and characterful emergency service vehicles built. From fire engines and ambulances to police and rescue vehicles, each tells a story of innovation, bravery and the communities they served.
Ranging from horse-drawn and early motorised vehicles to more modern appliances, the collection charts over a century of change in emergency response, technology and design. Many of these vehicles were once responding to major incidents, everyday emergencies and moments of national significance.
Whether currently on display in our galleries, used for learning and events, or preserved behind the scenes, they play a vital role in helping us share the human stories at the heart of the emergency services.
Around 25–30 vehicles are on display at the museum at any one time, allowing for changing exhibitions, restoration work, outreach projects and the ongoing care of the collection.
