This KS3 history workshop explores why new emergency and civil defence services were needed during the Second World War. Students will examine the creation and role of organisations such as the Auxiliary Fire Service, National Fire Service, ARP wardens and Civil Defence, and consider how Britain prepared for and responded to the dangers of war at home. Through discussion, evidence and historical understanding, the session shows how wartime pressures transformed public services and changed the way people were protected. A guided session in the museum’s Engine House and Blitz Exhibition then brings these wartime roles and responsibilities to life.
