The UK's only Emergency Services Museum

Making the museum welcoming to all

Accessibility information

The museum is housed within a historic Victorian Police, Fire and Ambulance Station, so access in and around the building can be limited in places. For this reason, entry for wheelchair users is charged at £5.50.

The majority of the building is accessible to visitors using a standard wheelchair. A lift provides access to all floors, and additional ramps and widened doorways have been installed to improve accessibility for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility needs.

Please note that our cobbled courtyard can be challenging for those with moderate to severe mobility issues, and there are occasional steps throughout the ground floor.

Our main staircase has been worn through years of use and can be uneven underfoot, so please take care when using it. We recommend considering these features when planning your visit.

Despite the building’s historic limitations, our staff are always happy to help and will do everything they can to ensure you make the most of your visit. If you have any concerns or require additional support, please speak to a member of staff on arrival.

Further information about access around the building can be found via AccessAble. AccessAble is a third-party organisation, and while we do our best to keep information up to date, some details may be subject to change from time to time.

Sensory and access information

Sensory and access information

Being housed in a listed building means the museum’s layout can be confusing in places.

We use lighting, sound, smoke and smells in some areas to help bring history to life. If you would like more information about these elements, please speak to a member of our team. Sensory-friendly maps are available and highlight areas with sound, smells or other features that may be overwhelming for visitors with additional needs.

Visitors can also make use of our sensory backpacks. These are free to borrow and contain a range of items to help support visitors who may need a little extra help to enjoy everything the National Emergency Services Museum has to offer.

While dogs and animals are not permitted inside the museum, assistance and support dogs are welcome throughout the building. Our staff and volunteers are a friendly and supportive team, so please do ask if you need help at any point during your visit.

Visitors requiring 1-to-1 support are entitled to one free carer entry ticket for an essential carer or support worker when accompanying a full-paying visitor. This applies on a one-to-one basis and is accepted with one of the following:

Disability Living Allowance (Middle or Higher Rate)
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Carer’s Allowance
MAX Card (showing the +1 symbol)
Other recognised access cards

If you’re unsure whether your letter or card meets our requirements, please contact us on 0114 249 1999 and we’ll be happy to advise.
