After-Hours Investigations at the Museum
Housed in the country’s first purpose-built combined Police, Fire and Ambulance Station in the heart of Sheffield, this fascinating Victorian building has witnessed over a century of history. It served throughout both World Wars and remained in active use during the Sheffield Gang Wars of the 1920s, when as many as 16 people were held in each cell. The museum is located just off the inner ring road, opposite the current Law Courts and on the site of Sheffield’s former workhouse. Within the museum grounds once stood one of the city’s earliest picture houses, which sadly burned down in the late 1990s.
With its historic surroundings, this atmospheric station holds countless stories — from the prisoners who spent time in its police cells to the men and women who lived and worked within its walls. The building itself tells over a hundred years of character, change and lived experience.
While many areas of the building have been carefully converted into exhibition spaces and visitor facilities, original features such as the police cells, engine house and fireman’s bedroom remain proudly intact. Construction began on the site in 1886, with the station opening in 1900. The building continued operating as a police site until 1966, when the keys were handed back to the city.
Our paranormal investigation hire allows groups exclusive access on Friday and Saturday nights from 20.00 to 02.00. Hire starts from £450 for six hours, with additional hours available at £60 per hour. Two members of museum staff will be present throughout for security and to provide a short introduction to the building, along with health and safety guidance, as you’ll be exploring this historic site in the dark, with uneven floors.
Groups are welcome to sell tickets for their event; however, proof of appropriate insurance is required and group numbers are limited.
The museum café can remain open during the evening for drinks and snacks, or you are welcome to bring your own supplies and use the café as your base for the event. Either way, just let our team know in advance.
