Steampunk is a genre inspired by Victorian science fiction with its bonkers inventions and stories, taking the tales of authors like H. G. Wells and Jules Verne and bringing them to life in the form of creative costumes and wacky gadgets that combine the old with the new.

What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a genre that takes its inspiration from Victorian science fiction with its bonkers inventions and stories. Steampunks take the tales of authors like H. G. Wells, Jules Verne and Philip Pullman and bring them to life in the form of creative costumes & wacky gadgets. Taking on the form of their own characters, from airship pilot to explorer, Steampunks create an exciting world using ordinary objects. With a mixture of high-paced adventure and Victorian etiquette this world is all about imagination, invention and fun!

Examples of Steampunk influence in popular film & TV are Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Hugo. Even popular series Dr Who has strong Steampunk themes!

Steampunk market stalls.

At the heart of the museum, our original cobbled yard stands as a reminder of the constant activity that once filled this Victorian Police, Fire, and Ambulance Station. During this event the area will be transformed into a charming street market, offering a selection of steampunk gifts, clothing, and jewellery.

If you're interested in becoming a stallholder and joining the event, please email steampunk@visitnesm.org.uk
